First camera lesson

September 17, 2016

On Friday we had our first camera lesson in the studio, where we learnt how to use the Black Magic Mini Ursa cameras and the tripods. Starting off with the tripods, we were taught by Matt and Paul how to adjust the height by undoing the locks on all 3 legs, lifting it up to where we wanted and then doing up the locks when it’s level. Learning how to pan and tilt was easy as you use the pan handle, but I also now know that you can lock the pan and tilt so the shot stays where you want it to which is very helpful to make it look professional. We bubbled the tripod by moving the top around until the bubble was in the centre of the spirit level. This is to keep the shot straight and level.

After that, we learnt how to put the camera on the tripod, turn it on, and use the features such as zoom. We were told to zoom all the way into a shot, focus it by twisting the part of the lens closest to the camera, and then zoom back out to what we wanted to shoot. To get the right exposure we had to use the blue toggle on the side of the lens, being careful not to press the release button for the lens.

The best settings for the Black Magic Mini Ursa camera are:
ISO – 400
Shutter angle 180° (the lower the shutter angle, the less blur there is on movement)
White balance – 5600K to 6600K for outside, 3000K for inside

I enjoyed this studio lesson because I never knew previously how to set up a camera like that, and how to adjust the settings to make the shot look as good as possible. This information will be really useful when filming the actual thriller because it will allow me to use the camera to its full potential, and get the settings right for each different shot, and the movement/exposure etc. it requires.
